Este artigo visa identificar alguns elementos temáticos e estilísticos presentes na obra São Bernardo, os quais colocam o romance de Graciliano Ramos como um dos mais representativos da produção do autor e da segunda fase do Modernismo no Brasil. Graciliano representa, com maestria, o Neorrealismo, tendência que surge nas primeiras décadas do sec. XX, empenhada em revelar a realidade brasileira de forma critica, voltada às questões sociais, culturais, políticas e econômicas da sociedade da época. Também é típico do movimento o rebaixamento zoomórfico e o grotesco, formas de demonstrar como as questões políticas e sociais degeneram o ser humano, especialmente numa região como o Nordeste. A presente pesquisa é de natureza bibliográfica e, por meio de excertos de importantes teóricos, respaldará a análise dos fragmentos do corpus deste trabalho.
